FACULTY
Josh Scully

My name is Josh Scully. However, the kids know me just as "Scully." I have been teaching in some capacity and form for the past 15 years.

I received my PhD in Biochemistry at Wayne State University (Detroit) in 1990. I then had the typical post-doc experience, working at UNC-Chapel Hill for three years. While I was there, I realized that my true passion lay in teaching and coaching. UNC had a program where professionals could get certified in their respective field in just six months. After getting my teaching certification, I moved back to Michigan where I started teaching chemistry and biology at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor. I worked at Greenhills for 10 years. I also coached Cross Country and Track and Field. I was lucky enough to have some great success, getting two state championships in cross country. Over the past two years, I taught chemistry at Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Community College.

Earlier this year, serendipitously, I came upon this job. I had been thinking a lot about educational philosophies and felt there must be better systems which teach to the whole student. In this endeavor I came across the Montessori method and was very impressed with the ideas and practices. I ran into Cathe’s son, Ian, whom I taught at Greenhills and he suggested I talk to his mom about MMS and the philosophy. Voila, now I am here at MMS as the High School Director.

I am looking forward to this year and seeing the high school grow. The Montessori way has not been utilized much at the high school level, however I firmly believe that it can be and is only natural for the students who have been brought up through the system.

Finally, and definitely not least, not only will I be here at MMS but my son, Quinlan, 7 years old, is here as a 3rd year Junior. My wife, Missy, works in Plymouth as an Automotive Interior Designer for Johnson Controls. We are looking to move down to Monroe from Ann Arbor as soon as we sell our house! Obviously, there is much more about me, but I leave that to some other day.

I can be reached by e-mail at jscully@meadowmontessori.org.
